The best air conditioners in Malaysia will keep you cool efficiently so you won’t rack up a huge electric bill!

Air conditioner prices in Malaysia are typically around or under RM1,000 for non-inverters. And RM1,200 or more for inverters. But more on that later!

Have a look at this list of the best air conditioners in Malaysia! Along with some basic knowledge of how much horsepower you need for your space!

Table Of Contents:

Types Of Air Conditioners

There are 3 existing types of air conditioners. Though you will not often see the third one in the Malaysian market!

Regardless of which type you choose, an air conditioner will significantly dial down the temperature in your home. As it’s not enough to have just a ceiling fan these days.

1. Wall-Mounted Air Conditioners

Cold air sinks. So naturally, the ideal location for an air conditioner is high up on your wall!

A sub-type of wall-mounted air conditioners are Split Ductless Air Conditioners. These can cool multiple rooms without requiring a duct to be built into your walls!

2. Portable Air Conditioners

Some portable air conditioners (or air coolers) are made for the outdoors while others can be used indoors. Their main appeal is that you can move them where needed.

  • Not as cooling as wall-mounted ACs
  • No need to drill a hole into your wall
  • Can be pricey

3. Window Air Conditioners

Sized small to large, these can be very affordable if you just need a small one!

Best Non-Inverter Air Conditioner

Non inverter and inverter air conditioners are different and you should get an inverter air conditioner as they are more efficient in the long run.

But if you really can’t find one at the moment, here are some non-inverter options!

1. Panasonic 1.0HP Non-Inverter R32 Air Conditioner CS-PN9WKH

This is one of the best 1HP air conditioners (non-inverter) you can buy in Malaysia.

The Panasonic 1.0HP Non-Inverter R32 Air Conditioner CS-PN9WKH is a 2020 model with R32 refrigerant. While the similar model, CS-PV9TKH uses the R410A refrigerant.

Panasonic 1.0HP Non-Inverter R32 Air Conditioner CS-PN9VKH

For energy efficiency (EER), CS-PN9WKH beats the CS-PV9TKH (11.59 vs 10.96). Even though it has the higher cooling capacity (BTU) of 9,500.

However, both models product the same level of noise 48 dBA for the outdoor unit, 38 dBA for indoors.

Surprisingly though, the CS-PN9WKH does not have iAUTO (i.e. Panasonic’s fast cooling tech). But it does have a sleep and quiet mode. And you can only manually control the horizontal air flow.

Still, it’s one of the most affordable air conditioners you can get in Malaysia. By a reputable brand. But to save money on electric bills, it can’t do much (3-star energy rating).

At least you won’t lose sleep with it (the sound is not very noticeable, including the outdoor unit)!

A no-brainer option if you have a budget under RM1,000 and don’t mind a non inverter air conditioner! The Hisense 1.0HP Non-Inverter R32 Air Conditioner AN09CBG works fine, is cool and acceptably quiet (up to 38 dBA).

Hisense 1.0HP Non-Inverter R32 Air Conditioner AN09CBG - Side

Compared to the previous model (Hisense1.0HP Non-Inverter R32 Air Conditioner AN10DBG), the AN09CBG however, does have a slightly lower rated cooling capacity (9,000 Btu/h vs 9,500 Btu/h) and air flow rate (580 m3/h vs 600 m3/h) but it has a lower rated power consumption (830 W vs 850 W) too.

Hisense 1.0HP Non-Inverter R32 Air Conditioner AN09CBG

Although this does lead to a lower energy efficiency rate (3.18 W/W vs 3.28 W/W) as well. That said, a new advantage that the AN09CBG has over the AN10DBG is its auto cleaning feature.

Panasonic 1.5HP X-Deluxe R32 Aero Series Air Conditioner CS-XPU13XKH-1 - In Operation

DAIKIN 1.0HP Deluxe Inverter R32 Air Conditioner FTKU28BV1MF

They both have a 5-star energy rating, Smart app control, and similar rated cooling capacity (9,680 (3,070-11,600) vs 9,700 (3,700-11,600) Btu/h), power consumption (740 (260–1,200) W vs 730 (225-1,030)W) and air flow rates (646 m3/h vs 708 m3/h).

7. Sharp 1.0HP J-Tech Inverter Plasmacluster Air Conditioner AHXP10YMD

Instead of the Sharp AHXP10WMD, there is now a new model, the Sharp 1.0HP J-Tech Inverter Plasmacluster Air Conditioner AHXP10YMD.

Sharp 1.0HP J-Tech Inverter Plasmacluster Air Conditioner AHXP10YMD

The Sharp 1.0HP J-Tech Inverter Plasmacluster Air Conditioner AHXP10YMD has several features that the Sharp AHX9VED2 does not even though they are similarly priced (~RM1,400).

These include a self-cleaning feature, 4-way auto air swing, plasmacluster ion technology and a 15m airflow range (14m with the AHX9VED2 and AHXP10WMD).

And it’s because of the plasmacluster ion technology and a 15m airflow range that the the Sharp 1.0HP J-Tech Inverter Plasmacluster Air Conditioner AHXP10YMD makes it to this list of the best aircons in Malaysia too!

Sharp 1.0HP J-Tech Inverter Plasmacluster Air Conditioner AHXP10YMD - Side

However, between the AHXP10YMD and AHX9VED2, the AHX9VED2 has the higher rated cooling capacity (9700 BTU/H (3070 – 10000) vs 9,000 BTU/H (2,870 – 10,000)) and air flow rate (576m3/h vs 528 m3/h).

So it’s a compromise between cooling capability and features if you’re looking at both the Sharp AHXP10YMD and AHX9VED2.

For its price of ~RM1,500 though, Sharp 1.0HP J-Tech Inverter Plasmacluster Air Conditioner AHXP10YMD is not a bad deal, albeit not the best 5-star energy rated inverter 1HP air conditioner that you can get for this price.

8. HITACHI 1.5HP Premium Inverter Series R32 Air Conditioner RAS-VX13CJ

Let’s start with what’s great about the HITACHI 1.5HP Premium Inverter Series (R32) Air Conditioner RAS-VX13CJ:

Firstly, this air conditioner model from HITACHI’S Premium Inverter Series has an energy efficiency star rating of 5 stars. Secondly, the Frost Wash feature will make maintaining this air conditioner more effortless.

HITACHI 1.5HP Premium Inverter Series R32 Air Conditioner RAS-VX13CJ

And thirdly, the compressor comes with 10-year warranty!

Unfortunately, the high price tag of RM2,600+ might hinder those considering the RAS-VX13CJ. The deluxe 1.5HP counterpart, the HITACHI RAS-SX13CJ Deluxe Plus Inverter Series (R32) 1.5HP Air Conditioner has a more attractive price of ~RM1,900.

On top of having a similar cooling capacity, 5 energy stars and a slightly higher air flow rate (210-750 vs 210-720 m3/h). But some have reported that this model (HITACHI RAS-SX13CJ) is relatively noisy (48 dBA maximum).

Once again, we can’t help pointing out that the Haier UV Cool R32 Inverter Series HSU-13VXA21 is just much better value than the HITACHI RAS-VX13CJ since it too carries a 5-star energy rating, a comparable air flow rate but goes for RM1,600!

  • Energy Efficiency Star: 5 Stars
  • Type: Inverter, Wall-Mounted, Indoor

  • Refrigerant: R32

9. Mitsubishi 1.0HP Inverter R32 Air Conditioner MSY-JP10VF & R32 MSY-JP10VF2

To us, there’s really no point in getting the Mitsubishi 1.0HP Inverter R32 Air Conditioner MSY-JP10VF over the Mitsubishi 1.0HP Inverter R32 MSY-JP10VF2.

Mitsubishi 1HP Inverter R32 Air Conditioner MSY-JP10VF

Because the Mitsubishi 1.0HP Inverter R32 MSY-JP10VF2 is only a tad bit more expensive than the Mitsubishi 1.0HP Inverter R32 Air Conditioner MSY-JP10VF (~RM70 difference).

If you take a look at the specs, both models come with a 5-star energy rating and a 2-year general warranty.

But the Mitsubishi 1.0HP Inverter R32 MSY-JP10VF2 has the higher rated cooling capacity (9554 BTU/h vs 8871 BTU/h). Although the air flow range of the Mitsubishi 1.0HP Inverter R32 Air Conditioner MSY-JP10VF is wider than that of the Mitsubishi 1.0HP Inverter R32 MSY-JP10VF2 (237-750 vs 315-739.2 m³/hour).

Either way, maintenance is easy with both the Mitsubishi 1.0HP Inverter R32 Air Conditioner MSY-JP10VF and Mitsubishi 1.0HP Inverter R32 MSY-JP10VF2. As the outside has a dual barrier to reduce the amount of dust that can get into the unit!

Additionally, the purifying filter and vanes are removable for when it’s time to clean the air conditioner! The blower is also very easy to access for cleaning!

But if you don’t need a fancy air conditioner that cleans itself, maintenance for the Mitsubishi 1.0HP Inverter R32 Air Conditioner MSY-JP10VF and Mitsubishi 1.0HP Inverter R32 MSY-JP10VF2 is as easy as it gets and they have reasonably good specs too.

Therefore, if you are looking for a 1HP or 1.5HP air conditioner, don’t get the respective 1HP and 1.5HP models in the ACSON AVO R32 S-Series.

Within the 2HP inverter air conditioner category (with 5 energy stars), the ACSON 2.0HP Inverter AVO R32 Air Conditioner A3WMY20NF considerable value for money (under RM3,000):

How Do Air Conditioners Work?

In case you’ve ever wondered how an air conditioner works:

  1. They take in air
  2. And filter the air from dust and other impurities (Some models of air conditioners work as air purifiers too)
  3. Then, cool the air by passing it over a cooling coil (containing a refrigerant)
  4. Clean cool air is blown back into the room
  5. While the coil accumulates moisture from the air (i.e. not unlike an air dehumidifier), excess water is drained out and excess heat is vented out

As you can see, an air conditioner removes moisture from the air. Which can make your skin dry. You’ll know this if you always spend long hours in an air conditioned environment!

Worried about getting dry skin? Try an ultrasonic diffuser or humidifier!

Maintaining Your Air Conditioner

By right, you should be getting your air conditioner serviced once in 6 months. Or even 3 months if you use it every day!

This is to keep the air conditioner free from mould and other icky stuff that may clog it up!

What you can do in the meantime:

  • Remove and rinse the filter meshes
  • Wipe the exterior
  • Only set the temperature between 23-26°C

Conclusion

We personally think that you need not look at the other air conditioner models once you see how much value the Haier UV Cool R32 Inverter Series Air Conditioner HSU-10VXA21 or HSU-13VXA21 are.

Not only are they energy efficient with a 5-star rating, but they are powerful and affordable too. However, if you’re looking for a Smart air conditioner, you can check out the models by DAIKIN or Panasonic.
