What Is An Air Fryer?
About the same size as a rice cooker or pressure cooker:
This is another electronic kitchen appliance that has made its way into many households. It cooks by circulating hot dry air around in a contained space.
Similar to an oven in fan mode!
Who Needs An Air Fryer?
- Small households with a preference for frozen and fried food
- As a smaller alternative to an oven
- For making homemade chips and other fried food using less oil
What You Might Not Know About Air Fryers
The resulting food is not necessarily healthier than deep-fried food:
So don’t think you can get away with eating fried food every day once you have an air fryer! Moderation is key here!
And according to BBC Good Food, food from an air fryer is still fried food which can contribute to the usual problems associated with weight gain!
Air Fryer Types
Because you occasionally need to rotate the food for even cooking,
There are 2 types of air fryers that are designed to make this easier:
1. Air Fryers With A Pull-Out Tray
These are suitable for shallow frying – for example, fish or baked vegetables. You just pull out the tray and give it a shake every 5 minutes or as directed.
For these models however, you usually can’t see what’s going on inside without pulling out the tray.
2. Air Fryers With A Bowl
And there are air fryers with bowls that are capable of self-stirring! Either with a paddle or by rotating the bowl/ basket automatically.
There may be also a viewing window on top so you can see the progress of the cooking.

It’s almost the same size as the Philips Daily Collection 0.8L Air Fryer HD9218/31 but with ~5 times the cooking capacity!
A glossy and smooth black exterior with rose gold detailing, and a minimalist digital display contribute to its aesthetic appeal!
The ample basket can accommodate enough food for a family of 8 easily but you can still use it for smaller quantities of food too.
Cleaning is easy as well since you don’t need any oil. Although a light brushing of oil does bring out the crisp in your food!
There are 8 preset programs (e.g. French fries, chicken, fish, muffins, etc) plus the flexibility to manually adjust the temperature or time.
The timer can go up to 60 minutes! For most air fryers, that limit is usually 30 minutes.
All of the various functions, temperature, and cooking time are conveniently accessible and clearly displayed on the touch panel.
And if you have to pull out the frying pan at any time (eg., to check on the cooking progress, flip the food or add a drizzle of oil for added crisp), the machine will pause automatically.
When the air fryer is done cooking, it’ll turn off by itself. The fan will continue running for ~15 seconds in order to cool down the interior.

For safety measures, we like that this air fryer goes on pause any time you open the lid!

PerySmith has a 2-year long warranty for their crimson air fryer, PS1520. It’s big enough to fit a whole chicken in!
The timer automatically switches off the fryer when the time is up.
We find that the PerySmith 4.8L Air Fryer EcoHealth Series PS1520 works well for juicier foods – like meat. But tends to make drier foods (like samosas) even drier.
Small families with extra counter space can consider this air fryer, especially for frequent use! It’s particularly very useful (and easy to use) for heating up frozen food.

Best Value
There are 8 pre-set programs to try out from the digital display of the Khind 3L Air Fryer ARF3000. That includes frozen food, chicken drumsticks, French fries, and more!
When it is on, you’ll hardly notice the fan running.

That aside, the obvious appeal of the Khind 3L Air Fryer ARF3000 is its price. This air fryer is value-for-money as you get a cake tin, and frying basket (of SUS304 stainless steel). Plus, a recipe book and a pair of tongs!

8. Tefal Easy Fry Classic 4.2L Air fryer – EY20
The Tefal Easy Fry Classic 4.2L Air fryer (EY20) has a 4.2L capacity that can accommodate a whole chicken or cook large portions of food (up to 4 people).
On that note, if you need to cook a lot in one go but only have a small budget, the Tefal Easy Fry Classic 4.2L Air fryer (EY20) is affordable.
You can use it to fry, grill, bake and roast food but there are no pre-set temperature or times for these functions. And you will have to set these yourself manually.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for something with more menus, the Tefal Easy Fry Precision Digital (4.2L) EY40 has 8 pre-set menus in a touch screen panel unlike the Tefal Easy Fry Classic 4.2L Air fryer (EY20).
Because the Tefal EY20 just has simpler knobs to set and control time and temperature. Unfortunately, the knobs do not turn easily (I.e., tight) and may occasionally get stuck during cooking too.
But the Tefal EY20 is ideal for those looking for an air fryer that is straightforward with few buttons to mess with. All you need to do to get it to work is turn 2 knobs (temperature and time) making it easy to handle for older folks!

Furthermore, the size of the air fryer is no constraint on its versatility as you can even bake cakes with the Philips Daily Collection 0.8L Air Fryer HD9218/31. Although we have to say that the manual is not very beginner friendly.
With its limited capacity (i.e. basket can’t’ hold much) however, the Philips Daily Collection 0.8L Air Fryer HD9218/31 is most suitable for a household of 2 pax or less!
The Philips Daily Collection 0.8L Air Fryer HD9218/31 is also pretty pricey for its size. Larger air fryers like the Khind 3L Air Fryer ARF3000 (0.8L vs 3L) are cheaper (RM399 vs RM300)!

Largest Capacity (10L)

This is useful for adjusting some of the inaccurate preset functions (e.g. pizza, chips, whole chicken)!
Unusual for an air fryer, the bowl of the HETCH Digital Turbo 10L Air Fryer DAF-1720-HC automatically rotates 360 degrees for minimum involvement from you!
And you won’t need to interrupt the cooking process either because you will be able to see the entire cooking process via the transparent lid!

11. Philips 7.3L Premium Air Fryer XXL Smart Sensing HD9860/99
Best Quality (~7L)
This huge airfryer is perfect for large families as it can serve up to 6 people!
But given the impressive cooking capacity, it’s also bulky, heavy and will take up space on your kitchen counter.
The size of the Philips 7.3L Premium Air Fryer XXL Smart Sensing HD9860/99 is the same as the older model; Philips Premium Airfryer XXL HD9630/99 is also 7.3L. And both of these air fryers weigh almost 8kg.
However, a very noticeable upgrade in the new Philips 7.3L Premium Air Fryer XXL Smart Sensing HD9860/99 is definitely the versatile design which we believe goes well in any kitchen.
Note: The older model (Philips HD9630/99) has a tendency to release smoke! But thankfully with the new model, that problem seems to have cleared out (pun intended).
And unlike the similar sized older model (Philips Premium Airfryer XXL HD9630/99) where the numbers fade easily from the dials, the new Philips 7.3L Premium Air Fryer XXL Smart Sensing HD9860/99 comes with a sleek LCD screen panel.
Which makes it easier to see the exact time and temperature you are setting.
You will also notice that there are 5 pre-set menus on the panel of the newer Philips 7.3L Premium Air Fryer XXL Smart Sensing HD9860/99.
Furthermore, it also has a smart sensor that detects the type of food you’ve put in so the air fryer can accordingly adjust for the optimum time and temperature.
It is a hit or miss with some dishes but luckily you still have the option of manually setting the time and temperature.
Cleaning the Philips 7.3L Premium Air Fryer XXL Smart Sensing HD9860/99 however, is tricky as the pan’s bottom uses a mesh which is hard to clean out especially after particularly oilier foods.
On the whole, if you’re someone who can afford to splurge on an air fryer and enjoys cooking often or cook large portions, we highly recommend the Philips 7.3L Premium Air Fryer XXL Smart Sensing HD9860/99 for versatile cooking options.

How To Choose The Best Air Fryer
1. Budget
So how much is an air fryer going to cost you? The models we’re recommending here start from RM150 all the way up to ~RM1,500.
On average, they are around RM300.
The price generally correlates to how many features the air fryer has as well as its capacity and build quality!
Air fryers from notable brands like Philips will also cost more.
2. Size
Most air fryers in the market have families of 4 in mind.
So if you have a larger household, look for an air fryer model that mentions XL in the name!
Note: 800g is the smallest on this list.
3. Features To Look Out For
Besides a stirring paddle and rotating basket, the following can be very useful:
- Temperature settings
- Grill mode and accessories
- Timer (digital/ analog)
- Pre-set programs
- Alarm for when cooking is done
How To Maintain & Clean Your Air Fryer
First, always unplug your air fryer before cleaning it! This is an electrical appliance and you don’t want to electrocute yourself!
- Use a damp cloth to wipe the interior and exterior
- You can wash the pan/tray or bowl with regular dish wash soap and water.
- Do not use a metal scrubber on the pan or bowl to prevent scratches on the non-stick surface!
- Avoid scraping the bowl or tray with metal utensils
- Before you start cooking, make sure the air fryer is completely dry
- Keep the heating element free of debris and spills
- Remove stubborn residues off the bottom of the interior by soaking for a while before washing
- Lastly, don’t ever overfill your air fryer!
