Read this guide first so that you know what to look for! There are a few affordable Smart TVs in this list too, for budgets around RM1,000!

What Is A Smart TV?

Simply put, Smart TVs run on an OS (similar to smartphones or tablets) which can connect to the internet.

This allows you to access streaming sites like YouTube, Netflix, etc. And other web-based features, such as social media.

Another prominent feature of Smart TVs is device-casting, where you can mirror your device’s screen onto the TV:

That’s far more convenient than using a remote!

What Do You Need For A Smart TV

For a smooth viewing experience:

You’ll need reliable high-speed internet and a good Wi-Fi connection or ethernet cable (to connect directly to your router).

What Are The Advantages & Disadvantages Of A Smart TV?

Advantages:

  • Apps on a bigger screen
  • Streaming capabilities
  • Higher resolution than the best budget smartphones!
  • Some models can serve as a hub to communicate and control your other Smart devices

realme 32in HD Android Smart TV

Performance & Features

From the hardware-front, the Realme offers up a 400 nits Ultra-Bright Display, 24W Quad Speakers (w/ Dolby Audio).

It also has a respectable 1GB + 8GB 64-bit Quad Core Processor to run everything smoothly.

The TV supports both HDR 10 (High-Dynamic Range) and HLG formats for better color, saturation and overall image quality.

HDR support is absent in both the similarly priced GELL 32” Smart TV or Megra 32D1000X.

With an Android OS, the 32” Realme has built-in Google Assistant and Chromecast functionality, along with access to major streaming sites (Netflix, Prime Video, etc.)

As for connection ports, the Realme has 3 HDMI ports, 2 USB ports as well as Bluetooth 5.0 functionality, so you can connect your gaming consoles or USB sticks without fuss.

Verdict – Best Budget Android TV with HD

We recommend the 32” Realme as a great budget option, or if you prefer something that won’t take up too much space.

While the 32” Megra and GELL Smart TVs cost less, the Realme 32” HD Smart TV is more feature-rich whilst still being reasonably priced.

While a Smart Remote is provided, the TV also has Chromecast built-in, allowing you to cast music and videos directly through your phone.

Verdict – Best 60” 4K Smart TV

Although it doesn’t have the amazing frame rate or latest imaging technology of the high-tech LG 48C1PTB:

With a large screen and beautifully lit images, the SHARP 4TC60CK1X offers excellent Smart TV functionality.

It’s similarly priced to the 55” Panasonic TH-55HX655K but is cheaper to the 65” Sony KD65X8000H.

And it’s the only 60” Smart TV we have on our list, with a balance of screen size and affordability.

The stand adds an extra 0.2kg to the 7.7kg TV.

Sharp 42in Full HD Android Smart TV 2TC42BG1X

Performance & Features

The 42” HD Smart TV by SHARP has many similar features to the SHARP 60” 4TC60CK1X but with lower specs.

It has a high-quality image processor, HDR compatibility with Netflix, and a unique TV design which reflects speaker audio towards the viewer.

Verdict – Best HD Smart TV (Mid-Ranged)

With a 42” screen and HD resolution, the Sharp 2TC428G1X is a very serviceable mid-ranged Smart TV that allows you to watch Netflix in HDR!

It’s a bridge between budget options (such as the Realme or GEL 32” Smart TVs) and more high-end offerings such as Sony’s KD65X8000H.

But if you prefer screen quality over functionality, the Megra 50″ D50KY can offer you a 4K UHD viewing experience at only around RM300 more, which is an option worth considering.

Build Quality

Sleek and stylish with a bezel-less design, the 55” Hisense 55E6F is a great minimalist addition to your living room or home office.

At 16.6kg, this is not a light TV so make sure your TV cabinet can support it!

Performance & Features

It has a 4K UHD display resolution and, along with 4K decoding and streaming, can offer the crisp images necessary for such a display.

Apart from that, the TV can also upscale SD or HD video content to 4K, improve color quality through precision color mapping, and reduce motion artifacts with proprietary smooth motion tech.

While a remote is available, Hisense also offers a mobile app (RemoteNOW) which connects directly to your TV, allowing you full control with a user-friendly interface.

The 55E6F also offers two distinct modes, a ‘Game Mode’ which reduces input latency for your console. And a ‘Sports Mode’ which boosts overall image quality for high-speed scenes.

Couple this with virtual surround sound technology and a wide range of connectivity features, and you have an amazing budget option for a Smart TV.

Verdict – Best Budget Smart TV with 4K

If you’re looking for a 4K UHD Smart TV without any additional bells or whistles, the 55” Hisense 55E6F is definitely a prime choice.

It’s also one of the cheapest 4K UHD Smart TVs on our list! With the main trade-off being that it’s not an Android TV. And thus, doesn’t have access to a number of apps and functionalities.

Hisense 55in 4K Smart LED TV 55E6F

Pros:

Cons:

5. Sony 49″ 4K UHD Smart TV KD-49X8000H

Build Quality

Featuring a narrow bezel design and a slim blade stand, Sony’s KD-49X8000H is very much a modern Smart TV, making the most out of its 49” screen.

The stand is sturdier than with other TVs – its 0.5kg can support the 11.6kg screen.

The IPS panel also allows for a wide viewing angle, great for hosting multiple people.

Performance & Features

With the X1 4K HDR Processor, the 49X8000H offers 4K resolution images, with a realistic color and contrast palette.

Aside from native 4K Detail, Full HD or 2K images and videos can also be upscaled close to 4K resolution.

Other features of the Smart TV include a wider-range color spectrum, as well as Motionflow technology. Which reduces blur and afterimages for fast moving scenes.

It also has access to both Dolby Atmos™ and Dolby Vision™, providing great audio quality and HDR visuals respectively.

The Smart Remote incorporates a mic and a dedicated Netflix button, so you can start streaming with a click.

Sony KD-59X800H is comparable to the Hisense 55EF, but with built-in support for Android and Apple users (i.e. Google Play and Google Assistant).

It also has native support for Apple Air Play and Apple Home Kit, as well as built-in Chromecast functionality.

Verdict – Best Smart TV For Android/Apple users

Therefore, Sony KD-49X8000H is one of the best <50” Smart TVs we have on our list if you own Android and Apple devices.

And it’s comparable to the Hisense 55EF and Megra D50KY, albeit with more features and a higher price.

Sony 49in 4K UHD Smart TV KD-49X8000H
  • Screen Size: 49″ (123cm)

  • Price: ~RM2,499

Pros:

Cons:

6. Sony 65″ 4K Smart Android LED TV KD65X8000H

Build Quality

Sony’s KD65X8000H is from the same series as the KD49X8000H discussed above, with a bezel-less design and bladed stand for a chic modern look.

The only visible difference being that the KD65X8000H has a much larger 65” (164cm) screen, and weighs a hefty 21.7kg (without the stand). Nearly twice as much as the 49” version!

Performance & Features

As an upscaled version of the KD49X8000H, Sony’s KD65X8000H has many of the same features.

This includes a crisp 4K Resolution screen with brilliant colors and brightness and usage of both Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision.

It also runs on Android OS, which gives you Google Assistant and the Play Store app catalogue. Along with further support for Apple Air Play, Apple Home Kit, and Chromecast.

However, the KD65X8000H packs Sony’s X-Balanced built-in speakers. For a better audio experience over the smaller model (KD49X8000H).

Verdict – Best Overall Smart TV (4K with Great Sound System)

Sony’s 65” KD65X8000H is a premium quality Smart TV with great visuals, backed up by both its brand name and user reviews.

The high quality and user compatibility is coupled with a very steep price. Costing quite a bit more than the Philip’s 65PUT6654, the other 65”4K Smart TV on our list!

Sony 65in 4K Smart Android LED TV KD65X8000H
  • Screen Size: 65″ (164cm)
  • Resolution: 3,840 x 2,160 4K UHD

7. Panasonic 55″ 4K HDR Android Smart TV TH-55HX655K

Build Quality

A narrow bezel design and minimalist stand is the industry standard for modern Smart TVs, and Panasonic’s 55” HX655K fits those standards to a T.

The screen is built for a wide-viewing angle (178°), and is also fairly light for a 55” Smart TV. Weighing in at 10.3kg (10.5kg with the stand)!

Performance & Features

With a 4K UHD Resolution screen, the 55” HX655 offers highly detailed images with full HDR support.

Together with a 4K Color Engine, to ensure proper contrast between dark and light scenes for realistic scene. All with HD/FHD upscaling support.

As for colors, Panasonic’s Hexa Chroma Drive uses 6 base colors instead of the usual Red-Green-Blue, for a more accurate color reproduction across a wide range of images.

See what Hexa Chroma Drive is:

Since it is an Android TV, the TH-55HX655K has an abundance of apps available through the Google Play Store. Not forgetting voice control courtesy of Google Assistant.

In addition to its built-in Chromecast for directing casting from mobile devices.

Verdict – Best Lightweight Smart TV

Although Panasonic’s TH-55HX655K is fairly run-of-the-mill, it does what it’s supposed to very well. Offering great visuals with a host of Smart TV conveniences.

As the TVs quite light for its size, it fills a unique niche in higher education or offices, where you might be constantly moving screens.

However, if you just need a 55” Smart TV for casual use, the XiaoMi Mi LED TV 4S has similar features at a much lower price, albeit at a lower image quality as well.

Panasonic 55in 4K HDR Android Smart TV TH-55HX655K
  • Screen Size: 55″ (139cm)
  • Resolution: 3,840 x 2,160 4K UHD

Pros:

Cons:

8. Philips 65″ 4K UHD LED Android TV 65PUT7374/68

Build Quality

The 65” Philips 65PUT7374/68 follows the Smart TV trend of a slim, bezel-less frame. But the

stand is actually quite unique. Because it is less pronounced than with similar Smart TVs.

Even if it weighs considerably heavier than other stands (24.3kg with stand, 23.9kg without).

Performance & Features

Performance-wise, the 65PUT7374/68 has just about everything you need in a high-end smart TV. And is very comparable to slightly more expensive Sony’s 65” KD65X8000H.

Starting off, it has a 4K UHD LED Screen powered by the P5 Perfect Picture Engine with HDR10+ support, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. For a premium audio and visual experience.

So, when compared to a standard FHD TV, the 65PUT7374/68 offers higher image details, vivid colors and skin tones, crisp contrast ratios and motion blur elimination.

Its Ambilight technology consists of LEDs around the frame to cast on-screen colors onto nearby surfaces. Giving an effect of immersive ambient lighting.

As an Android TV, the 65PUT7374/68 has access to the Play Store and voice control functions through Google Assistant. As well as Philips’ own library of proprietary apps.

However, it doesn’t have Chromecast capability or Apple AirPlay/Home Kit support (unlike the Sony KD65X8000H). A bummer if you are an Apple fan!

Verdict – Best Android TV with 4K (~RM4,000)

Boasting an impressive feature set, the 65” Philips 65PUT7374/68 is a true premium Android Smart TV among the best 4K Smart TVs.

But between the 65” Philips 65PUT7374/68 or the Sony 65” KD65X8000H:

The Philips 65PUT7374/68 is the cheaper of the two. However, if you use Apple devices, you should take the Sony KD65X8000H.

9. Philips 58″ 4K UHD Smart TV 58PUT6604

Build Quality

A minimalist frame and a low-key stand make the Philips 58PUT6604 very easy on the eyes. And it fits right in with other high-quality Smart TVs from renowned brands.

It’s 17.8kg without the stand. And with the stand, the total weight is 18kg.

Performance & Features

For reference, the Philips 58PUT6604 is very comparable to the Sony X80H series in terms of overall screen quality:

With a 4K UHD Screen, the 58PUT6604 delivers 4 times the pixels as a standard FHD screen. While also providing HDR 10+ support for excellent overall video quality.

Furthermore, its Pixel Precise Ultra HD engine can upscale images and videos to improve depth, contrast and overall color detail, no matter the image source.

Like the Sony X80H, the Philips 58PUT6604 has both Dolby Atmos™ and Dolby Vision™ for cinematic audio quality and visual fidelity when viewing HDR content.

For its OS, the 58PUT6604 runs on Philips own SAPHI operating system. Which features a one-button access to an icon-based menu and favorite streaming apps like YouTube and Netflix.

One negative point of the 58PUT6604 is that it doesn’t have notable 3rd Party support. It lacks both Apple AirPlay and Chromecast. And you cannot access Play Store apps or voice control options.

Verdict – Best 4K Smart TV For Movies

While the Philips 58PUT6604 isn’t a robust hub device like the Panasonic TH-55HX655K:

It’s still a top-notch screen at a very affordable price. But you’ll have to live without an Android OS (i.e. Play Store), Chromecast or Apple AirPlay. Although, you’ll still have YouTube and Netflix!

10. XiaoMi Mi 55″ 4K UHD Android Smart LED TV 4S

Build Quality

Sporting an all-metal body, thin bezel metal frame, nothing on our list is quite as eye-catching as the MI LED TV 4S.

As with any other TV, you can mount it onto the wall or place it on a stand (13.5kg with stand). Although given that the stand isn’t adjustable, wall-mounting might be the better option.

Performance & Features

For the price point, XiaoMi’s 55” LED TV 4S has some pretty impressive features. The first of which is a 4K Ultra-HDR screen for life-like, high quality images, powered by a 64-bit quad-core processor.

Other screen improvements include an upgraded graphics engine from older models. As well as motion smoothing to reduce motion blur for fast-paced scenes.

While the screen isn’t as high-tech as the Sony X80H Series or Samsung’s T7000 series, it’s perfectly functional and for a cheaper price.

Audio-wise, the 4S has Dolby Audio and DTS HD dual-decoding, for an immersive sound experience.

This Android Smart TV is pre-built with Google Assistant for easy task management and planning. So you can use it as a hub for other smart devices in your home.

Built-in Chromecast also allows you to project your smartphone’s screen directly to the TV.

Moreover, there ample ports for physical connections (LAN, HDMI, USB, etc), along with Bluetooth and 2.4GHz/5GHz Wi-Fi support.

Verdict – Best Smart TV For Streaming

Officially endorsed by both Netflix and Prime Video, the 55” Mi LED TV 4S is great if you just want to watch quality content on your streaming site of choice.

Sure, it’s not the most brilliant 4K screen around, but the price is very appealing if you want a budget Android Smart TV with 4K!

11. Samsung 50″ 4K UHD Smart LED TV UA50TU7000KXXM

Build Quality

Samsung’s 50” TU7000 is visually striking with a 3-side boundless design, discreet frame and slim body. It’s lightweight at 11.6kg with the stand. And 11.4kg without.

Performance & Features

The 50” TU7000 features a Crystal Display for exceptional color expression, and is powered by Samsung’s Crystal Processor 4K:

Which provides color fidelity, high contrast ratios, and HDR mastering.

Along with 4K UHD Resolution and HDR, the TU7000 is one of the best-looking Smart TVs on our list, outdone only by the LG 48C1PTB OLED TV from a technical front.

Other features include a Game Enhancer mode for reduced blur. And a clean cable solution for easier cable management.

However, the TU7000 runs on Samsung’s Tizen system. Which unfortunately means you don’t have access to Google Play Apps or Google Assistant.

Its features include a Tap-view casting option (tap the TV with your phone to cast), and Bixby for voice control options. The TU7000 is compatible with Apple’s AirPlay2 too.

While impressive, the TV does lack Chromecast support.  And there are few ports (only 2 HDMI and 1 USB). And with no sign of a Composite port, its connectivity options are limited.

Verdict – Best Picture Quality 4K Smart TV

Gorgeous picture quality is still fairly affordable with the Samsung’s UA50TU7000KXXM. The compromise is the narrow range of ports.

And that it does not run on Android OS. But if you’re familiar with Samsung products (and Bixby), this is a natural choice for you!

12. Megra 50″ 4K UHD Smart LED TV D50KY

Build Quality

A local Smart TV, the Megra 50” D50KY is housed within a moderately thin frame.  But it is sizably thicker than other bezel-less models in this list.

Despite that, it weighs 15kg. A reasonable weight for a Smart TV of this size.

Performance & Features

With a 50” 4K UHD screen, the Megra D50KY produces great visuals for a budget 4K Smart TV. Though not quite as impressive as Samsung’s 50” TU7000. Or even the Mi LED TV 4S.

And even if it is an Android TV with access to Google Play Store, it does not have access to Google Assistant. Because it doesn’t seem to have a built-in microphone.

For casting, you can use the built-in casting functions available in both the Netflix and YouTube. But the Megra D50KY unfortunately does not support Chromecast or Apple Air Play.

Instead, it uses ESHARE Screen Mirroring. This allows you to cast your mobile device’s screen directly to the TV. It’s slightly laggy, works for both Android and iOS devices.

Verdict

The Megra D50KY is very much a budget 4K Smart TV. And is a great option if you need a large 4K screen for your favourite shows and series at a staggeringly low price.

However if your budget allows it, we’d highly recommend going for the 50” Samsung TU7000 or the Sony 49″KD-49X8000H instead. Especially if your main focus is on quality above all else.

Megra 50in 4K UHD Smart LED TV D50KY
  • Screen Size: 50″ (126cm)
  • Resolution: 3,840 x 2,160 4K UHD

13. LG 48” 4K Smart OLED TV with AI ThinQ 48C1PTB

Build Quality

While similar in frame design to other bezel-less Smart TVs, the LG 48C1PTB does have a more pronounced base and rear housing panel.

And it’s considerably heavy too. 18.9kg with the stand, and 14.9kg without the stand!

Performance & Features

This premier OLED TV uses self-lighting LEDs for superior (compared to standard backlit LEDs TVs) color fidelity, color volume, and true blacks.

But the LG 48C1PTB really stands out with its gaming focused features!

Like the 120Hz display with both Nvidia G-Sync and AMD Free-Sync compatibility! For high frame rates with minimal screen tearing.

As for the ‘Smart’ portion of the TV, the LG 48C1PTB runs on webOS. With the usual features you can expect from a Smart TV (e.g. voice commands and hub device connectivity).

Verdict – Best OLED Smart TV

Whether you’re an avid gamer or casual watcher, the LG 48” 48C1PTB is one of the best 4K Smart TVs in Malaysia. The screen is visually stunning and the TV is feature-rich.

Be warned though! Premium quality comes at an equally premium price. It’s the most expensive 4K Smart TV in our list, beating out Sony’s 65” KD65X8000H by a notable margin.

Choosing The Best Smart TV

1. Size

Obviously, it has to fit your house and be a comfortable distance for you to watch!

Here’s a rough formula:

Take the distance (inches) between your sofa and where you want the TV to be. Multiply that number by 0.84.

And that should be the TV screen size you should look for!

2. TV Resolution

Bigger screens will need more pixels (i.e. higher resolution) for crispy clear videos/ pictures!

Whatever you choose, it should at least support full HD (1080p) or 4K!

3. Display Technology

This is the way the pixels are lit up.

What you need to know:

3.1. OLED

OLED uses electric current to light up

  • Quicker response time
  • Better contrast (black means no light at all)
  • More expensive to make

Are OLED Screens Worth It?

No (at least not for casual users).

Although they perform faster and have good contrast, the high cost doesn’t make sense.

When there are more cost-friendly LED LCD TVs that can offer great picture quality for less!

3.2. LED LCD

Where white LEDs are used to light up (i.e. backlight) the LCD (liquid crystal display) screen, offering you:

  • Sharper images
  • More natural lighting

For LED LCDs, there are further separated into:

  • IPS (In Plane Switching) TV – Best for: watching at an angle and wide angles, in general (i.e. sports)
  • VA TV – Best for: watching movies in a dark room

And there’s more for LCD displays:

Direct Or Edge LED?

Neither technology is better than the other. And it mostly depends on your personal preference. (e.g. high contrast, brightness)

Direct (sometimes written as D-LED):

  • May be bulky
  • More power hungry
  • Uniform backlight
  • Black looks dark grey
  • Brighter overall

Edge:

  • Thinner
  • Doesn’t use as much power
  • Better contrast
  • Backlight not as uniform
  • Prone to backlight bleeding

4. Picture Quality High Dynamic Range (HDR)

This is the TV’s ability to improve on picture quality.

A TV with High Dynamic Range (HDR) will emphasize the brightest and darkest area of a picture/ video. As well as improve the color range.

5. Do I Need Alexa, Google Assistant, Or Siri Built-In?

Voice control offers you a similar experience to using one of the best smartwatch in Malaysia:

Allowing you to use your voice to control the TV and any other Smart devices you might have at home.

While it’s not necessary, having a voice assistant is part and parcel of a Smart TV.  So it’s highly recommended you get one that comes with it.

6. Trusted Brand

Chances are, you’ve already heard of these best Smart TV brands in Malaysia:

  • SHARP
  • Panasonic
  • Hisense
  • Sony
  • Phillips
  • Samsung
  • LG

7. Budget

Larger TVs with more features tend to be more expensive.

So, if you’re really looking to stay within budget, it’s sometimes better to get a smaller TV with a sufficient pixel count.

Rather than a larger screen which offers the same resolution, but with the pixel count stretched out.

8. All Other Features To Consider

  • Warranty Period
  • Wall mount, or stand options
  • High quality cables– cheap cables may impact visual experience.
  • Multiple HDMI ports (especially for gamers)
  • Bluetooth connectivity – for headphones, wireless earbuds and other peripherals
  • At least HDMI 2.0 support
  • Decent audio performance
  • Brightness (nits) – 100 and 400 nits is practical but considered low; New TVs offer more than 1,500 nits
