How To Choose The Best Robot Vacuum

When buying a robot vacuum, you need to consider:

  1. Your home size
  2. Budget (and obstacle avoidance) – pricier robot vacuums have many different sensors for more efficient cleaning (and less banging into things)
  3. Mopping capability (and water tank capacity) – Get a robotic vacuum cleaner with a tank that’s large enough to cover your home! Unless you don’t mind frequent water top-ups!
  4. Climbing ability – Your home may have height differences of a few cm between rooms. Like a small step into a bathroom or kitchen.
  5. Mapping technology (i.e. sophisticated navigation system)- this is how robotic vacuum cleaners “remember” rooms

Other Key Features To Look For:

  • Running time – longer is better
  • Charging time – shorter is better
  • Auto-return to docking station
  • Mapping ability (i.e. sophisticated navigation system)- this is how robotic vacuum cleaners “remember” rooms
  • Remote control via smartphone
  • Dust capacity – how often do you have to empty the dust trap?
  • Strong suction power
  • Side brushes and battery – is it possible to get replacements?

1. Qihoo 360 C50 2in1 Vacuum & Mop Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Hard to beat the Qihoo 360 C50 2in1 Vacuum & Mop Robot Vacuum Cleaner for its incredible value! The cleaning performance is amazing for a robot vacuum cleaner in this price range.

Qihoo 360 C50 Robot Vacuum Cleaner With Remote Control

Better than the Xiaomi G1! And its 2600 Pa suction power is a match for the significantly more expensive Roborock S6 MaxV (2500 Pa)!

But if your home has a lot of raised floors, do note that this robot vacuum cleaner can only climb a max of 1.7cm. And in that case, you may want to pay ~RM100 more for the Xiaomi Dreame F9 instead.

There is a remote control but you can also operate it easily with your phone. And even when you’re not at home!

It sweeps as well as mops! Albeit the floor will be a bit wet. The suction power is enough for pet dander and to get cat litter off the floor! Even on the quiet mode.

It will be able to reach underneath furniture too. However, it’s not perfect and misses some areas occasionally. Changing to another mode (i.e. edge cleaning) usually solves the problem.

The robot vacuum cleaner can catch on carpets – you’ll know when it does cause it will alert you!

So the Qihoo 360 C50 2in1 Vacuum & Mop Robot Vacuum Cleaner is best for small homes with simple layouts, few obstacles, and minimal carpets.  As it only has gyroscope technology to guide it!

2. ILIFE V55 Pro Robot Vacuum Cleaner

For the same price as the Qihoo 360 C50 2in1 Vacuum & Mop Robot Vacuum Cleaner, the ILIFE V55 Pro Robot Vacuum Cleaner is impressive for its ability to mop and sweep simultaneously!

You may really like the ILIFE V55 Pro Robot Vacuum Cleaner if your previous vacuum cleaner struggles with long hair. Because strands do not get caught it this robot vacuum cleaner!

However, it’s not the quietest model. The noise it makes can be heard from the next room. That does not include the occasional collision with furniture!

Plus, the suction power is only adequate for daily cleaning.

And there’s no phone app with this robot vacuum cleaner. Which means no real-time monitoring. Although you can still schedule it for daily cleaning with the remote control.

It does return to its station on its own for charging too. The actual run time is closer to an hour than the stated 2 hours. So don’t get this if you have a larger area to clean!

Else, you’ll also have to refill the water tank every 30 minutes! If you have tile floors in your home, the mopping can leave some water marks! This is not an issue for wood floors.

We would highly recommend the ILIFE V55 Pro Robot Vacuum Cleaner for those that have small but tidy homes. And just want a simple robot vacuum cleaner to maintain the cleanliness. More so if you have pets!

For larger homes, you may want to get the ECOVACS DEEBOT OZMO 950 Robot Vacuum Cleaner instead.

3. Proscenic 830T Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Setting up boundaries is a little different with the Proscenic 830T Robot Vacuum Cleaner:

For additional cost (~RM60), you can get 105 cm of magnetic tape to use on the floor. To block off areas where you do not want the robot to go.

Pet owners will be pleased enough with the powerful suction of the Proscenic 830T Robot Vacuum Cleaner. It picks up hair, stray litter, sand, and even kibble! As well as unseen dust!

That awesome power (2,000 Pa) comes with a tradeoff! This vacuum is noisier than other robot vacuum cleaners. But bearably so.

Regardless, the vacuum cleaner is very easy to use. But you need strong home WiFi (not hotspot via phone) in order to operate it while you’re at work. Or to schedule cleaning and set up more no-go zones!

Proscenic 830T Robot Vacuum With Remote Control

Note: There is also a remote control but functions are limited compared to the app.

One other great thing about this robot vacuum cleaner is that it will automatically find its way to its charging dock when the battery is low. This feature does not work so well during mopping mode.

Note: Charging takes 3 hours.

By the way, vacuuming and mopping are 2 separate functions for the Proscenic 830T Robot Vacuum Cleaner. Unlike with the ILIFE V55 Pro Robot Vacuum Cleaner.

Its most troubling setback is that it cannot save any map that it generates! Which means you have to wait for it to map every time you want to use it!

Note: If this robot gets stuck, it will automatically turn off.

And carpets are a major weakness for this robot vacuum cleaner! It is prone to getting stuck on them. Moreover, its side brushes may loosen, break or fall off. It doesn’t have a problem with wires though.

  • Relatively low climbing capability (1.5cm)

4. Xiaomi Mijia 1C Robot Vacuum

An appealingly simple exterior is only one of the desirable points of the Xiaomi Mijia 1C Robot Vacuum!

That, and the fact that this robot vacuum falls under a RM1,000 budget! But still has its own home app!

The app lets you choose any of the 4 modes for various floor types, monitor and control the cleaning progress, etc.

However, it cannot cover a huge area (especially mopping with a water tank capacity of only 200ml)! Which limits it to use in small apartments only!

In fact, the mopping function isn’t great. But the vacuum suction is very strong (2500Pa). Something that smartrobotreviews.com found during their test of the Xiaomi Mijia 1C Robot Vacuum!

This robot vacuum cleaner is smart enough to return to its docking station for charging when the battery is low. And resume cleaning after!

It’s not as quiet as other robot vacuum cleaners at ~ 72dB. And you can expect it to bump into furniture from time to time!

Getting under furniture is not a problem though as it is the shortest of the Xiaomi robot cleaners! As for climbing, its ability maxes out at 20mm.

With all that said, small homeowners on a budget can consider the Xiaomi Mijia 1C Robot Vacuum!

Xiaomi Mijia 1C Robot Vacuum
  • Run Time: 90 minutes (Quiet Mode)
  • Charging Time: 3 – 4 hours
  • Battery Capacity: 2,600 mAh
  • Suction Power: 2,500 Pa

  • Loudness: 50 – 65 dB
  • Dustbin / Water Tank Capacity: 600 ml / 200 ml
  • Price: ~RM799
  • Warranty: 1 Year

  • Quick setup (Mi Home App)
  • Middle suction level (out of 4 levels) is usually enough for dust
  • Detects and avoids staircases
  • Works on carpets
  • Vacuums and mops simultaneously
  • Spot cleaning is one of the available cleaning modes
  • Can save a mapped area
  • Able to operate without WiFi

Cons:

  • Mopping leaves your floor quite wet
  • Will eventually need to get spare parts to replace the brushes
  • You have to map out which areas are carpeted (robot cannot detect carpet on its own)
  • No alert if dust or water tank is full/ empty
  • Can’t choose which room you want it to clean through the app
  • May take a few rounds to map out an area completely

5. Dibea GT200 Robotic Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Apartment and studio owners can also rely on the Dibea GT200 Robotic Robot Vacuum Cleaner to mop and vacuum efficiently. Via remote control or through the dedicated app!

It is compatible with Alexa and Google Home – like the similarly priced Xiaomi Mijia 1C Robot Vacuum.

There are some awkward movements initially but the Dibea GT200 Robotic Robot Vacuum Cleaner is sufficient at vacuuming. Without much noise even on Normal mode.

But if this is not your first robot vacuum cleaner, you may notice that its mapping technology is inferior to robot vacuum cleaners that use a laser mapping (LIDAR) navigation system!

Such as the ECOVAS DEEBOT T9 Or Roborock S6! You’ll see that the Dibea GT200 Robotic Robot Vacuum Cleaner often repeats its paths!

For mopping, it’s best that you clear the floor of obstacles first before starting the robot vacuum cleaner!

The water tank (350ml) and battery of this robotic vacuum cleaner lasts long enough for 3-room apartments. Even if you have different surfaces to cover! Including carpets!

First-time robot vacuum cleaner owners can’t complain much about the Dibea GT200 Robotic Robot Vacuum Cleaner for under RM1,000!

It is one of the cheapest robot vacuum cleaners and does not lack features! Just don’t get this if you have tried more expensive models or you will be disappointed with its mapping inefficiency!

Dibea GT200 Robotic Robot Vacuum Cleaner
  • Run Time: 120-150 minutes
  • Battery Capacity: 2600 mAh
  • Suction Power: 1,200 Pa
  • Control: App & Remote

Cons:

  • May leave a water trail when mopping

6. ECOVACS Deebot OZMO 950 Robot Vacuum Cleaner

ECOVACS DEEBOT OZMO 950 Robot Vacuum Cleaner is a multi-floor mapping model (LIDAR technology) that is both a vacuum and mop!

Setting up this robot vacuum cleaner with the app takes little time whether you are using iOS or Android.

Once set up, you can control everything from the suction power, set virtual boundaries, toggle Auto-boost (for carpet detection), and schedule cleaning!

Voice commands are possible via Google Home or Alexa.

However, you can’t run any programs until the robot has fully mapped out the house! And it also starts mapping all over again (i.e. eating the battery) when it runs out of power or is stopped.

We do like that charging dock looks neat (i.e. with cable management) too.

Despite a climbing ability of 20mm though, this robot vacuum cleaner gets stuck quite often. Much more than Roomba vacuum cleaners. And it’ll voice this out to let you know too!

Compared to other robot vacuum cleaners, the ECOVACS DEEBOT OZMO 950 Robot Vacuum Cleaner isn’t as effective at vacuuming or mopping. But it’ll do the job for regular cleaning. And quietly!

Take note that the battery life, dust and water tank capacity is insufficient for larger homes (e.g. 2,000sq ft)!

And if you can afford to pay this much for a robot vacuum cleaners, we would suggest other models.

As there are reports that the ECOVACS DEEBOT OZMO 950 Robot Vacuum Cleaner gradually malfunctions after a year of use.

Watch it in action:

ECOVACS DEEBOT OZMO 950 Robot Vacuum Cleaner
  • Run / Charging Time: 200 minutes / 5 hours

  • Streaks when mopping
  • May reset mapping for random reasons

7. ECOVACS DEEBOT T9 Robot Vacuum Cleaner

ECOVACS DEEBOT T8 already impressed many but how does the ECOVACS DEEBOT T9 Robot Vacuum Cleaner compare?

Note: T9+ has the auto discharge station

ECOVACS DEEBOT T9+ Robot Vacuum Cleaner And Auto-empty Station

For starters, the exterior hasn’t changed much between the models although T9 is now white instead of black!

With the T9, there’s an air freshener pod feature (pods sold separately). Which is not nearly as interesting as the much higher suction power! Double that of the T8 (3,000 Pa instead of 1500 Pa)!

Set it to vacuum or mop your house without worry as this robot vacuum cleaner can handle edges and carpets! Its climbing ability and object detection has noticeably improved from the T8 too.

You can leave the robot on its own most of the time with the automatic-emptying function. Although, this is costly to maintain with the single-use dust bags!

Do consider the ECOVACS DEEBOT T9 Robot Vacuum Cleaner if you want a truly intelligent robot vacuum cleaner that really scrubs at your floors!

As its mopping ability is one of the best in the market! As tested by techradar.com. The battery life will also suffice to vacuum larger homes too!

ECOVACS DEEBOT T9 Robot Vacuum Cleaner
  • Run / Charging Time: 180 minutes / 390 minutes
  • Battery Capacity: 5,200 mAh
  • Suction Power: 3,000 Pa
  • Control: App
  • Smart Home Compatibility: Amazon Alexa & Google Home
  • Scheduling: Yes
  • Climb Capability: 2 cm
  • Virtual Wall: Yes
  • Size: 35.3 x 35.3 x 9.3 cm (L x W x H)
  • Weight: –
  • Loudness: 67 dB
  • Dustbin / Water Tank Capacity: 420 ml / 180 ml
  • Price: ~RM2,199
  • Warranty: 1 Year

Pros:

  • Accurately maps your home (multi-level mapping too)
  • Very powerful suction –automatically adjusts power according to floor surface
  • Long runtime
  • Works with Alexa and Google Home
  • Great companion app
  • Good mopping performance and will smartly avoid carpets too
  • Redocks on its own
  • You can set up virtual boundaries
  • Quiet relative to its power (around 60dB)

Cons:

  • Improvements are not significant enough to upgrade from a T8
  • Accessories (single use dust bags and mop pads) are costly to replace
  • Air freshener feature is gimmick-y and a separate function from mopping
  • Mopping is a little noisy (oscillation)
  • Auto empty station can’t empty out hair so well
  • Short warranty for the price

8. Roborock S6 Pure Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

Xiaomi’s Roborock S6 Pure has won many households over with its silent and exceptional performance as a dual-function robot vacuum cleaner! It can reach up to 2000PA!

When it detects a carpet, it will increase its suction power. Each room will be mapped out as it’s cleaning – even the ones upstairs (i.e. multi level mapping)!

The more durable rubber brushes are removable and easy to clean. But best of all, this robot vacuum doesn’t need 3 hours to charge! Mopping is decent as well.

Promo video for the S6 Pure:

If you’re debating over the Roborock S6, S6 Pure or S6 MAXV:

All three are very similar in appearance and design. Although S6 touts 2 additional sensors over the S6 Pure. Which makes the S6 Pure a cheaper version of the S6.

However, the mapping capabilities of the S6 Pure are still good. And you will still be able to clean by room or set no-go zones, as with the S6 and S6 Max V.

While you will miss out on the superior performance (for mopping and obstacle avoidance) of the S6 MAXV:

The S6 Pure will serve and for much less too! Its vacuuming performance is comparable to the S6 MAXV!

For further comparison between these models, see the next item on this list, the S6 MAXV!

Roborock S6 Pure Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
  • Run / Charging Time: 150 minutes / 150 minutes
  • Battery Capacity: 5,200 mAh
  • Suction Power: 2,000 Pa
  • Control: App
  • Smart Home Compatibility: Amazon Alexa & Google Home
  • Scheduling: Yes
  • Climb Capability: 2 cm
  • Virtual Wall: Yes
  • Size: 35 cm x 9.6 cm (W x H)
  • Weight: 3.6 kg
  • Loudness: 50 dB
  • Dustbin / Water Tank Capacity: 480 ml / 160 ml
  • Price: ~RM1,559
  • Warranty: 1 Year

Pros:

  • Hardly gets stuck
  • Can set up virtual barriers
  • Dust container can be accessed from the top
  • HEPA filter that is washable
  • Great vacuuming performance (also good at removing pet hair)

Cons:

  • Relatively bulkier than other robot vacuum cleaners
  • Will suck up small cables
  • Small dust capacity
  • Mopping isn’t as good as with S6 MaxV

9. Roborock S6 MaxV Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

At first glance, the high end Roborock S6 MaxV Robotic Vacuum Cleaner doesn’t look too different from the Roborock S6 Pure besides being black.

But it does have a faster processor! Other improvements include longer battery life and stronger suction.

And unlike the S6 and S6 Pure that only rely on LIDAR sensors, S6 MAXV has a camera at the front to further improve its obstacle avoidance!

Helping it avoid some things lying around your home (e.g. shoes, wires, pet waste, toys, etc) significantly better than with the cheaper Roborock models!

If you have a larger home, you will appreciate the extra 30 minutes runtime you can get with the S6 MAXV! S6 MAXV also has a larger water tank (300ml vs 140ml for S6, and 180ml for S6 Pure)!

The tank isn’t just larger but supports remote control as well – it smartly distributes water and pressure. And you can control the water level with the app!

Scheduling by room for mopping (and vacuuming) is doable with the S6 MAXV as well. You can’t do this with the S6 Pure or S6!

Alas, if not for the existence of similarly priced but comparable models like the Ecovacs Deebot T9:

The Roborock S6 MaxV Robotic Vacuum Cleaner would be a no-brainer for larger homes!

10. Roidmi Eve Plus Robot Vacuum Cleaner – Best Value Robot Vacuum

If you can afford to pay a little more than RM1,000, the Xiaomi Roidmi Eve Plus Robot Vacuum Cleaner mops, sweeps and vacuums simultaneously (or separately).

Roidmi EVE Plus Robot Vacuum Cleaner Charging
Roidmi EVE Plus Robot Vacuum Cleaner Charging

However, what sets it apart from the Xiaomi Mijia 1C Robot Vacuum is the automated dust collector which also functions as the home base for charging.

At this price, it’s great value for money and cheaper than the ECOVACS DEEBOT T9 Robot Vacuum Cleaner! The Roidmi Eve Plus Robot Vacuum Cleaner has a significantly more room for dust and water!

Although, the ECOVACS DEEBOT T9 Robot Vacuum has the higher suction power (3,000Pa vs 2,700Pa).

We did a full review on the Xiaomi Roidmi Eve Plus Robot Vacuum Cleaner and we think it’s worth its price! Especially for those that want to clean their home daily, but don’t have the time for it!

You will need a strong internet connecton to make use of all its Smart features though!

Roidmi EVE Plus Robot Vacuum Cleaner At Dust Collector Base
  • Run Time: 230 to 245 minutes
  • Charging Time: ~5 hours
  • Battery Capacity: 5,200mAh
  • Suction Power: 2,700Pa

  • Smart Home Compatibility: Amazon Alexa & Google Home
  • Scheduling: Yes

  • Virtual Wall: Yes
  • Size: x x  cm (L x W x H)
  • Weight: 6kg, 2.7kg (dust collector)

  • With a HEPA filter

Cons:

  • Not quiet
  • Doesn’t have a camera to detect areas that require more intense cleaning
  • Single use mop pads and dust bags are not sustainable

11. iRobot Roomba i7+

Forgiving that it does not have a mopping function, the very expensive iRobot Roomba i7+ offers near autonomous cleaning!

Including the ability to empty out its own dust container when it is full. Like the ECOVACS DEEBOT T9 Robot Vacuum Cleaner, it is pretty loud process! The i7+ will do that as often as needed to complete a task!

iRobot Roomba i7+

If you’re someone who wants to make full use of the companion app, you will be pleased with the sophisticated UI and what is possible (Imprint™ Smart Mapping)!

The app allows you to do a lot more than scheduling. For instance, you can select rooms, and even set a time for how long the robot should be in the room! You will know the location of the robot if it gets stuck too!

And despite not having a LIDAR navigation system (it has its patented iAdapt® 3.0 Navigation with vSLAM® technology), the iRobot Roomba i7+ hardly ever gets stuck.

While the initial mapping is tedious, it remembers the layout of your house as well as obstacles. It’s not noisy and will be able to get the corners and nooks (I.e. under the bed) too.

The transition between different surfaces is smooth. Somehow, it cleans carpets better than hard floors. But we don’t suggest the iRobot Roomba i7+ if you have a pet that constantly sheds long fur.

For hard floors, the brushes may fling debris around. So the robot needs multiple passes over the same area. If you have laminate floors, they may get scratches if you allow the rubber rollers to get too dirty.

Overall, the price of the iRobot Roomba i7+ is the biggest setback. And we would much rather spend our money on the ECOVACS DEEBOT T9 Robot Vacuum Cleaner (if we had a high budget)!

iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum Cleaner
  • Run / Charging Time: 120 minutes / 180 minutes
  • Battery Capacity: 3,300 mAh
  • Suction Power: 1,800 Pa
  • Control: App
  • Smart Home Compatibility: Amazon Alexa & Google Home
  • Scheduling: Yes
  • Climb Capability: –

Do Robot Vacuums Really Work?

When the first robot vacuums made an appearance in Malaysia, they didn’t work efficiently. Wasting battery (and time) bumping into objects with no set direction!

Small steps and carpets would cause these early robotic vacuum cleaners to fall or get stuck frequently!

Still, with regular use, all floors will eventually be free of dust! Even under beds and sofas!

And today, these modern home appliances are even better! Some with built-in mapping capabilities! To define the most efficient cleaning path! In addition to various sensors to help them detect obstacles!

1. Are Robot Vacuums Worth It?

Robot vacuum cleaners are more affordable than they used to be and are no longer solely limited to upper class households!

Price Range: RM800 – RM4,500

And most competitive models now have dual purpose – to vacuum and mop!

You can keep your house clean without spending your time and energy bending over or dragging a conventional vacuum behind you!

2. Robot Vacuums Are Best For:

  • Households with pets and children that bring in dirt (i.e. frequent floor cleaning)
  • Anyone who enjoys having a really clean home
  • Spacious houses with carpets
  • Busy households – No more cleaning up after a long day of work!

3. Why You May Still Need A Traditional Vacuum

  • Cluttered/ narrow houses with too many obstacles
  • Window sills, cars, mattresses, stairs or anything off the floor!
For these scenarios, you might want to invest in a cordless vacuum cleaner. This type of vacuum can get into places robotic vacuum cleaners cannot! Like your car!

Conclusion

For small apartments, Xiaomi’s Mijia 1C Robot Vacuum is the best robot vacuum cleaner in Malaysia 2021. Just note that the runtime is short!

And if you can afford it, the ECOVACS DEEBOT T9 Robot Vacuum Cleaner has impressive features!
