Starting to work out? Or want to change up your workout routine with a new flavor from the best whey protein in Malaysia?
Whey protein can be easily consumed in a protein shake. Benefits include muscle growth and performance optimization. With faster recovery too!
You can see from this list alone, that there are many brands and flavors! But don’t sweat it (pun intended), we made this guide to help you choose one!
What Is Whey Protein?
Because it’s easily absorbed by the body:
This milk-based protein is popular to supplement workouts. Like running on your treadmill!
And as meal replacements. They are usually sold as flavored powder. To be added to beverages and shakes!
Note: If you have serious lactose intolerance, you could be allergic to whey.
Whey protein has a biological value of 104. By comparison, whole eggs have a BV of 93.7.
Another good source of protein are bird nest drinks!
Note: Higher biological value is better as this means the essential amino acids are present. And in the right proportion!
Types Of Whey Protein
Like collagen, there’s not just one type of whey protein!
1. Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC)
Among the types of whey protein, this one has a higher nutrient content!
2. Whey Protein Isolate (WPI)
This type is easier to digest. And the lactose is usually removed too. Along with carbohydrates and fat-soluble vitamins.
Lactose intolerant? Probiotics can help!
3. Whey Protein Hydrolysate (WPH)
For the fastest absorption rate, go for Whey Protein Hydrolysate (WPH). Which contains protein in an even smaller form factor – peptides! Tastes bitter though.
If you want to know more on how to choose whey protein, refer to the section at the bottom of this post!

It dissolves easily in water but you can mix it with milk for a better taste!
While this popular product has won the hearts of most users in terms of taste and texture:

There are contrasting reviews regarding the mixability, though. Some claim it dissolves completely in milk or water. While others still notice a grainy texture and lumps in their drink.
Unfortunately, the sweet taste is not everyone’s cup of tea either:

Still, the high calorie and carbohydrate per scoop is a deal breaker that has deterred some users.
In addition to that, users have pointed out that based on the nutritional content label, this product can pack a punch when it comes to cholesterol content.

And several users have complained about the mixability:
While others remark that it mixes perfectly well if you follow the instructions on the label (shake it for at least 10-15 seconds in a shaker cup or blend it).
Admittedly though, it does take longer and more vigorous mixing to mix it completely compared to other brands.
Unsurprisingly, there are also differing opinions about the taste of the product. Some think it’s too sweet and has a strong chemical aftertaste, while others rave about the great flavor!
Overall, most say they would buy it again. And some reviews noted that it has aided with bulking, and increasing muscle mass.

Other than the taste, users remark that the product can aid in maintaining fullness and building lean muscles. But of course, only with the right amount of training and exercise.
Don’t expect lightning-fast results, though. And it’s best not to take too many scoops per day to hasten the process. This may backfire, causing you to experience bloating or stomach discomfort.

But packed with nutrients!
However, don’t expect flawless mixability, as some users have noted a sandy powdery texture and un-dissolved lumps in their drink.
Most importantly, several users claim it has worked wonders in improving their exercise capacity and muscle recovery.
After consuming this protein powder long-term:
Users observed better exercise performance, such as being able to do more sets or lift heavier weights.
Furthermore, they mention gaining more muscle mass while burning fats. But only after using this product for months.

11. MusclePharm Combat 100% Whey Protein
MusclePharm Combat 100% Whey Protein is value for money, depending on where you get it from.
While it has a low sugar content, the brand has enhanced the taste of their whey protein powder with artificial sweeteners. Their top flavors include cookies n cream, chocolate and vanilla.
If you’ve had digestive problems with other brands (such as bloating, nausea, or stomach upset):
This protein powder is worth a shot! Users who had side effects from other products bid goodbye to digestive issues with this one!
And the non-clumpy texture after mixing is another bonus point for many!
It does require a decent amount of water (at least 500ml per scoop) to dilute it enough in order to avoid an overly thick and rich texture.
Additionally, numerous users have complained of how sweet it is. So much so, that many were unable to stomach even one serving.
Hopefully, watering it down may help combat the extra sweetness. But if you don’t have a sweet tooth, you’re better off with another product on this list!

How To Choose The Best Whey Protein
1. Check The Ingredient Label
Again, the main ingredient should be whey protein.
And since ingredients are listed in order of their quantity in the formula, whey protein should be the first listed ingredient!
How To Spot Amino Spiking:
Amino spiking or protein powder spiking is when manufacturers use cheaper amino acids to make up the total protein content. So you get less than what you pay for!
Such amino acids include:
- Creatine
- Glutamine
- Taurine
- Beta-alanine
- Arginine
- Glycine
To avoid getting scammed, watch out for the following signs:
- Amino acids listed as second ingredient after whey protein, but the exact quantity is not specified
- “Fortified with…” is usually acceptable
- If you find amino acids listed vaguely under “Other ingredients”
- An unbelievably cheap price
- If the label mentions an unspecified blend/ proprietary blend/ protein blend
2. Protein Source
This goes back to the type of whey protein you get!
3. Carbohydrates
You need at least 3% (of your suggested daily carb intake) per serving. Amino acid absorption is better when you have carbs to raise your insulin levels!
4. BCAA Ratio
As with most dairy products, whey protein is a natural source of BCAAs. In a good whey protein powder, 25% of whey protein will contain BCCAs!
Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) are necessary to:
- Build and maintain muscle
- Reduce muscle soreness and fatigue
- Prevent muscle breakdown (i.e. muscle wasting)
These are often listed as a ratio of L-leucine, isoleucine and valine. In that respective order.
Where the ideal ratio is 2:1:1.
These 3 amino acids are known as essential amino acids (EAAs) too.
5. Sugar Level
Always go for unsweetened formulas if you can!
Common sweeteners include:
- Stevia
- xylitol
- sorbitol
One last thing:
6. Fake Protein Powder Supplements
Not to scare you off protein powders completely:
But there have been cases where a genuine product has been tampered with. This is a scam practice in Malaysia. To dilute the protein content (e.g. with milk powder) so they can sell less for more.
Do question your seller if your product comes unsealed.

Is Whey Protein Consumption Safe?
As with any supplement (except vitamin C), you need to be careful in introducing it to your diet:
- Particularly if you have any low blood pressure or calcium deficiency
- Some manufactures put fillers and artificial sweeteners in their formula – you don’t need these!
- The first ingredient on the list should always be protein
- There should be at least 20g of protein per serving
- Always go for a certified protein manufacturer/ product (e.g. NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Choice)
- Super long ingredient lists are suspicious
Also, if your current diet already features lots of natural protein sources (e.g. meat, fish, eggs and dairy):
The effects of adding whey protein to your diet may not result in any major changes.

What Is The Recommended Amount For Protein Consumption
If your goal is to put on muscle and increase your fitness:
1.4g to 2g for every kg in your body is advisable.
For example, ~98 – 140g of protein if you weigh 70kg
Most products in the market have at least 20g of protein per scoop so the average adult will need at least 4-5 scoops per serving.
And whatever you do, don’t take it as a hot beverage as this will denature the protein! Making it ineffective (i.e. wasting your money).
